Official sources and further information
The Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) funding landscape is the most important financing instrument for energy-efficient new-build prefabricated homes in 2026. Two programs dominate: the federal Climate-Friendly New Residential Buildings programmes (KfW 297 and 298) and the complementary Home Ownership for Families program (WEF, KfW 300). Both provide reduced-interest loans with fixed rates for up to ten years and initial repayment-free years.
KfW funding programs for 2026 at a glance
In brief: KfW itself is the primary source for all current terms. The Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building also explains the program structure, application process and eligible measures in its federal Climate-Friendly New Construction funding section. It also states which requirements a KFN 298 home must meet in addition to the Efficiency House 40 standard.
The key requirement for the reduced-interest 298 tranche is the Quality Seal for Sustainable Buildings (QNG) — it combines requirements concerning life-cycle assessment, absence of harmful substances and the greenhouse-gas potential of the entire building. Brand-name providers such as Baufritz, Schwörer, Bien-Zenker and FingerHaus offer QNG-ready models as a standard option in 2026.
Application process and energy-efficiency expert
- Choose an energy-efficiency expert from the official list and have them prepare the Confirmation for Application (BzA).
- Apply for the loan through your bank before the project begins — after the planning application, but before signing the contract.
- After completion, have the same expert submit the Confirmation after Completion (BnD).
- For QNG, additional evidence from an accredited certification body is required before the planning application.
The responsible professional must be listed in the nationwide Energy Efficiency Experts List — otherwise KfW will reject the application. Brand-name providers generally employ listed experts or work with independent specialists; ask for written confirmation of the list entry.
Common pitfall: application order
KfW only funds projects whose application was submitted before signing the factory contract with the prefabricated-home provider. Anyone who signs the building contract first and approaches KfW afterwards loses all entitlement to funding; this cannot be remedied later.
Combining KFN, WEF, BEG and state programs
Some federal programs can be combined, while others cannot. KFN (297/298) and WEF (300) may be combined freely; BEG support for existing building renovations is not relevant to new construction. State development banks such as L-Bank Baden-Württemberg, BayernLabo and NRW.Bank add their own programs — usually reduced interest or repayment grants for young families. The Efficiency House framework in the 2026 GEG guide determines which level your home must achieve.
