Why are modern prefabricated timber houses winterproof?
In brief: Modern prefabricated timber houses are winterproof because their multi-layer walls are designed for year-round occupation and achieve U-values of 0.12 to 0.18 W/(m²K) – substantially better than the GEG minimum requirement of 0.24 W/(m²K).
A typical external wall has five to seven layers: internal lining, vapour control layer, service cavity, structural timber frame with mineral-wool or wood-fibre insulation, wood-based bracing board, façade insulation and exterior cladding. “The house cools down quickly”
Prefabricated timber houses warm up faster than masonry houses because their walls have less thermal mass. They also cool slightly faster when the heating is switched off. In permanently occupied houses this makes little practical difference because heating runs continuously. The better insulation more than compensates for the lower storage effect.
“Timber houses develop mould in winter”
Mould is caused by moisture, not by the building material. Modern prefabricated timber houses use a vapour control layer on the warm interior side and a vapour-permeable construction towards the outside. Controlled domestic ventilation reliably removes excess moisture. Correctly built timber houses do not have an increased mould risk.
